365体育投注our waste reduction strategy involves not only improving processes, equipment and materials to reduce waste generation, but also explores the beneficial use of waste and other residuals. our ultimate goal is zero waste to landfill.
Vision 2020 Goal
Stated Goal: Reduce manufacturing waste to landfills by 30% and ultimately to zero
In 2014, we established a voluntary goal to reduce manufacturing waste to landfills by 30 percent by the end of 2020 and ultimately divert 100 percent of our residual materials from landfills. We also approved a global “Waste Management Performance Standard” that defines acceptable global waste-handling practices. The new standard uses Manufacturing Excellence principles to maximize efficiency and minimize waste, and is aligned with Vision 2020 waste reduction goal.
A 30 percent reduction by the end of 2020 is ambitious because of the complexities surrounding efficient, cost effective solutions for disposal. We already beneficially reuse a large portion of our manufacturing residual waste. With improvements in operational efficiency, we continue to reduce overall waste generated, while finding new ways to use residuals.
Effective waste management is important to fulfilling our goals for both world-class manufacturing and sustainability.
Leadership is a key element in achieving our waste reduction goal. Operational and regulatory standards provide a framework to reduce waste generation and waste to landfills, and to divert more material to other beneficial uses. As part of these standards, every site must identify, quantify and document all generated waste and associated hazards. All sites must reduce the amount of waste generated, ensure proper management and disposal of waste, and ensure we meet or exceed regulatory standards.
We have created an internal network of professionals responsible for site-specific waste management. This network meets quarterly to discuss current events, policy requirements and best practices. Some of our converting sites and mills in Brazil are close to achieving a zero manufacturing waste to landfill goal by stressing efficiency, beneficial use of byproducts and recycling wherever possible, but there is still progress to be made.
